Process and Application Fit

Thrust ball bearings are designed for axial load in one direction. They are not a substitute for a radial bearing when the shaft carries significant radial load. That construction gives high axial stiffness in a short axial envelope, which is why it appears in applications where designers cannot afford a large bearing length.

The first configuration decision is usually raceway form. Flat-race washers are simple, compact and suited to lighter axial loads and lower speeds. Miniature thrust washers are thin and can distort if installed carelessly. We provide mounting recommendations for shaft and housing fits, recommended abutments and axial preload. The bearing should be loaded squarely, with the shaft washer and housing washer seated on their supporting faces.
