Where SUS440 Fits in a Stainless Bearing Program

SUS440 is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel. After hardening and tempering, it provides substantially higher surface hardness and wear resistance than austenitic grades such as SUS304 and SUS316, while retaining useful corrosion resistance for humid and mildly aggressive environments. This combination makes SUS440 a common choice for rotating assemblies that need stainless cleanliness without giving up load capacity or fatigue life.

Because SUS440 is magnetic and has lower corrosion resistance than SUS316, it is not the best answer for every job. For saltwater, strong chlorine, or food-contact acidic washes, SUS316 Stainless Steel Bearings or special stainless steels are usually a better fit.
